Understanding Different Therapies
Everyone’s needs are different, and therapists often use a range of approaches to provide the right support.
These are some of the therapies our team may use.
-

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
helps you accept your thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. It supports you to focus on what matters most and take small steps toward the life you want.
-

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
is a type of therapy that helps you notice and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. It gives you practical tools to manage how you feel and respond in everyday life.
-

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
helps you work through the thoughts and beliefs that can develop following a traumatic experience. It focuses on identifying unhelpful “stuck points” and developing more balanced ways of understanding yourself, others, and the world.
-

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
helps you be kinder to yourself and reduce harsh self-criticism. It supports you to feel safer, calmer, and more accepting of your thoughts and feelings.
-

Dialectal Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
helps you manage intense emotions, cope with difficult situations, and build healthier relationships. It teaches practical skills in mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and communication to help you respond to life's challenges in more helpful ways.
-

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)
is a therapy that helps your brain process and heal from distressing or traumatic memories. It uses gentle, guided eye movements to reduce the intensity of those experiences so they feel less overwhelming.
-

Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)
helps you understand and work through the underlying emotions and experiences that may be contributing to current difficulties. It focuses on recognising patterns, facing difficult feelings, and creating meaningful change in how you relate to yourself and others.
-

Internal Family Systems
is a therapy that helps you understand the different “parts” of yourself, like the part that worries or the part that protects you. It supports you to bring these parts into balance so you can feel calmer and more in control.
-

Te Oranga Hinengaro
is a Māori approach to mental wellbeing that sees your health as a whole — mind, body, spirit, and connection to others. It supports balance and healing by recognising the importance of whānau, culture, and a sense of belonging.
