Emily Fifield
Counsellor
Bay of Islands
Over the course of our lives many people experience situations and events they may find challenging, which overwhelm their ability to cope. With the right support the impact can be lessened.
Over the past 15 years Emily has been supporting people to live fulfilling lives and overcome the hurdles that trauma can bring. She has experience across homelessness, addiction, critical illness/end of life care and more recently specialised mental health and trauma informed practice. Her passion comes from experiencing her own trauma as a child and now seeing what support would have been beneficial at the time to help navigate her own journey as an adult. She has a Masters degree in Social Work and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and went on to complete post-graduate studies in trauma informed practice. This is where Emily’s passion lies.
Therapeutic Social Work is at the core of Emily’s practice, creating a warm and inviting environment and really listening to the needs of the people she feels privileged to meet. She enjoys working with people to identify their strengths, which can help to overcome barriers and provide space for healing and growth to take place.
As a teacher of Yoga since 2022 Emily draws upon these ancient traditions to promote holistic health and nervous system regulation, as the foundation for trauma work. She is passionate about our connection with natural world using this to support wellbeing and healing, alongside mindfulness-based techniques. Her practice integrates psychotherapeutic models such as attachment theory and acceptance and commitment therapy to strengthen our understanding of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Emily has worked with people from a diversity of backgrounds and cultures in both her home country England and now in Aotearoa. Understanding te ao Māori and bicultural practice is hugely important to Emily, having gained a strong interest in this indigenous culture while living in Aotearoa. Māori and other cultural models of health and wellbeing guide her in her practice, as does her recent learning of Rongoā Māori.
